Sleeping platform
A flat, raised surface built inside a vehicle to create an even bed over uneven cargo space.
A sleeping platform is a flat, raised surface, often built from plywood or a modular kit, installed inside a vehicle's cargo area to create an even bed over wheel wells, uneven flooring, or storage bins underneath. It turns an SUV, wagon, or van's rear space into a more usable and comfortable sleeping area.
Beyond comfort, a platform often adds storage underneath for gear, food, or a portable fridge, keeping items organized and out of the sleeping space while still accessible. Height and length need to be planned carefully against the vehicle's specific interior dimensions, since too little headroom above the platform can make the space feel cramped.
When building or buying one, measure your vehicle's cargo area precisely rather than relying on generic dimensions, and consider how the platform interacts with pad R-value, since a hard wooden platform still needs proper insulation underneath a sleeping bag on cold nights. A common mistake is building a platform focused only on storage space, leaving too little room underneath for a fridge or bins that need more height.
