Car Camping Glossary: 15 Terms Explained
The words that show up in car camping specs, reviews and how-to guides, explained without jargon.
- 12V fridge
- A compressor fridge that runs from a car socket or power station and can hold a set temperature, unlike a cooler that relies on ice.

- Comfort rating
- The temperature at which a standard cold-sensitive sleeper stays comfortable in a relaxed position. It is the most useful number for choosing a sleeping bag for mild nights.
- Condensation
- Moisture from breathing that collects on cold windows overnight. Cracking two windows for cross-ventilation reduces it far more than wiping.
- Dispersed camping
- Camping outside developed campgrounds, usually on public land, with no facilities. Check local rules for stay limits and fire restrictions.
- Extreme rating
- A survival figure, not a sleeping guide. It describes the risk of hypothermia, so never choose a bag by this number.
- Jump starter
- A compact lithium battery pack that can start a car with a flat battery without a second vehicle.

- Leave No Trace
- A set of outdoor ethics principles such as packing out all trash and camping on durable surfaces, promoted by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
- Low-voltage cutoff
- A fridge or accessory setting that shuts off before the car battery drains too far to start the engine.
- Lower limit rating
- The temperature at which a standard warmer sleeper stays warm curled up for eight hours. Below this, most people sleep poorly.
- Portable power station
- A rechargeable battery with AC outlets, USB ports and often a 12V socket, used to run fridges, lights and devices at camp.

- R-value
- A sleeping pad's resistance to heat loss into the ground, standardised under ASTM F3340. Higher is warmer, and car floors and cold ground both pull heat fast.

- Recovery kit
- Straps, shackles and traction boards for freeing a stuck vehicle on sand, mud or snow.

- Tailgate tent
- A shelter that attaches to an open SUV or hatchback so the cargo area becomes part of the sleeping space.

- Watt-hour (Wh)
- A battery's energy capacity. Divide it by a device's wattage for a rough runtime, then allow for conversion losses of around 10-15 percent.
- Window sock
- A mesh cover that slides over a car door frame, letting you open the window for airflow while keeping insects out.
