Awning

A car awning is a fabric panel, usually mounted on a roof rack or a vehicle's side rail, that unfolds to create shaded or rain-covered space next to the vehicle for cooking, sitting, or storing gear. Styles range from simple pull-out sheets to freestanding pole-supported designs that extend further from the vehicle.

Beyond shade, an awning reduces how much direct sun heats the vehicle's side panels and windows, which matters for keeping a parked car cooler in hot weather and for protecting an attached tailgate tent or camp kitchen setup from sudden rain. Wind resistance varies a lot between designs, with larger unsupported awnings more prone to flapping or strain in gusty conditions.

When buying, match the awning's mounting hardware to your specific roof rack or rail system rather than assuming universal fit, and check the manufacturer's wind rating if you camp in exposed or coastal areas. A common mistake is leaving a large awning extended in rising wind, which can bend mounting hardware or damage the roof rack it is attached to.
