Ice retention
How long a cooler keeps ice frozen, a key spec for choosing a cooler over a powered fridge.
Ice retention describes how many days a cooler can keep ice frozen under given conditions, and it is the main performance figure that separates basic coolers from heavily insulated, higher-end ones. It depends on wall thickness and insulation type, lid seal quality, and how often and how wide the cooler is opened.
Unlike a 12V fridge, a cooler with good ice retention needs no power source at all, which makes it simpler and more reliable for shorter trips, but it also means capacity gets used up by ice rather than only food and drinks, and performance degrades as the trip goes on and ice melts. Pre-chilling the cooler and its contents before loading extends retention noticeably.
When buying, weigh a longer retention time against the cooler's added weight and cost, since very high-end coolers can be significantly heavier and pricier for a few extra days of ice life that shorter trips may not need. A common mistake is judging ice retention purely by manufacturer claims without accounting for real-world factors like ambient heat and how often the lid is opened.
