Traction boards do one job: they spread the weight of a wheel across soft ground so the tire has something to climb instead of digging. That means they work on sand, snow, mud, and loose gravel, and they do nothing for a vehicle hung up on its frame or dropped into a rut deeper than the board is thick, where a strap and another vehicle are the answer. Length is the first spec because it sets contact area and how far the wheel can travel before it runs off the end, and a longer board is what gets a heavy vehicle moving on dry sand.
